Cannibals in Fiji?

While on a vacation in Fiji went had a lot of time to explore. Everyday was an adventure. Some were fun some interesting, some relaxing and others were a bit scary. We will blog about all of our adventures so stay tuned for more.
Did you know that about three generations ago there  were still cannibals in Fiji? We did not know this information until we were exploring Fiji. We were taken to Cannibal Rock and heard incredible stories of how the explorers, that didn’t have valuable items to trade, were lured to Cannibal Rock and then eaten.
The Fijian Islands were once known as the Cannibal Isles. I believe the last publicized and documented cannibalism was in 1867. Of course, just because there isn’t any public record of it, doesn’t mean it wasn’t still going on.
We hiked through the jungle vines, past beautiful waterfalls to end up at the infamous “Rock” The jungle vines are so massive that you will have to see them to believe how huge they are. In photographs they can look like tree trunks, but they are definitely jungle vines that drape from tree to tree. Our first thought was that it would be impossible for Tarzan to swing on them.
Our guide from the Sleeping Giant was so much fun and even photobombed one of our pictures. We were taught what was edible in the Fijian Jungle and what to stay away from. We swam in hidden waterfalls and had the most amazing day.
One tip that we have it to pack lots of bug repellent. We brought the bug guard spray and travel packets from Avon. They worked great and we did not get any bites.
We would also encourage you to bring backpacks to carry the repellent, swimsuits, towels, dry clothes and snacks!
Please email or message us with any questions you may have when planning your trip.

The Sri Siva Subramaniya temple in Fiji is a must see in Nadi, Fiji. Women should wear modest clothing, I suggest a long skirt and modest top. Men should wear long pants and shirt. If you come to visit the temple in inappropriate clothing you will be given wraps to wear over your clothing. I had dressed appropriately for the occasion, but David was given a sarong type garment to wear over his shorts.
We were in ahh of all of the colors in the paintings and artwork. The peace and wonder of this amazing temple was truly breathtaking.
A free vegetarian lunch is served daily in a large open patio area. As we looked at the area where lunch would be served, we noticed hundreds of school children seated behind a barrier which circled around the temple. We asked why they were all there and were told that all schools were let out today in honor of a special Temple Blessing Ceremony.
As we were touring this amazing peaceful place everyone was being asked to leave the temple. They were about to bless a new temple and all visitors had to leave the premises. For some reason a priest approached my husband and I asked if we would join them as they bless the new temple. We were so unbelievably honored and the experience just took our breath away. As we participated in the ceremony, we were approached by multiple people, they touched our hands and told us we were blessed. We participated in the ash blessing and were even allowed to take pictures, which is usually strictly for bidden.
I cannot even begin to describe this honor and the feelings that we had while participating in this sacred ceremony. We ate lunch the vegetarian lunch that was offered. Both David and I thought it was absolutely delicious. Please put this on your phone bucket list. Do not miss visiting a temple while you are visiting Fiji.

Riding in the Dolphin Seats!

One of my favorite parts of going on a sailing vacation is sitting in the seats at the front of the catamaran. I can feel the waves crashing up and splashing my legs. The water is so beautiful and the ocean waves are unbelievably relaxing. There are usually two seats at the front of each catamaran hull. I am not sure what the correct name is for the chairs but we call them the “dolphin seats” David usually sits in one and I sit in the other. Looking across the boat and watching my husband experience the same excitement, peace and joy that I am, is a wonderful experience. Sometimes the ocean is calm and it seems like we are gliding across the water. At other times it is rough, we dip down with our feet going into the ocean. The next second we are completely out of the water and can see the horizon for miles. We are both usually smiling ear to ear and taking photos of each other. Laughing when one of us gets soaked by a huge wave. At times we can see “flying fish” that just take our breath away.

Here are some tips if you plan to sit in the seats on a hour to two hour sail:
Go to the restroom, hydrate, put on sunscreen, put your camera/phone in a waterproof case hooked to your wrist with a bright colored flotation strap. If you tend to get cold when wet or when the wind blows, wear warm clothing.
Do not try to get leave the seats while you are still moving if the ocean is rough. Signal the captain to stop the boat if you feel it is too rough.
